Q&A with Louis

How Did You Get Started?

My Educational and Sports experiences have dramatically changed my pathway in life. Living most of my first 18 years in a loving family, supported by welfare due to the abrupt closure of a family business, I often found my joy and peace in sports participation.
One of my first academic and sports participation mentors was my Junior High School Physical Education teacher and coach. Honestly, I wanted to be just like him professionally and athletically. I started my quest to be a secondary Physical Education Teacher and Coach and to become a high school, college and professional star athlete.
Most importantly the vehicle to get me to accomplish my goals was education. Working hard academically and athletically, I experienced academic and athletic success. I became the first member of my family to graduate from college. and well as the first member of my family to be selected as an all-state student athlete and college baseball team captain and conference champion.
Following my passion, I started my teaching and coaching career as a secondary education teacher and coach. 18 Years after starting my career, I moved to Higher Education as Associate Director of Athletics at the Community College of Rhode Island, promoted to Associate Dean of Student Life /Athletics and then to Associate Vice President of Student Affairs as a member of the President's Council.
Enjoying my passion for teaching, I joined the faculty at Â鶹¹ÙÍø in the fall of 2009.

What Is Your Favorite Teaching Moment?

My favorite teaching moment is attending Commencement and watching the students that I have positively influenced, walk across the stage, receiving their diplomas. Also enjoy staying connected to my students after graduation.

What Advice Do You Have For Incoming Freshmen?

Begin to explore career options early on during freshman year. Through volunteer and part time experiences, learn what it is that you like to do and what it is that you do not like to do.
Begin to develop your "contacts team" of Industry professionals. It not so much "who you know" but its more about "who knows you."
